Additional funds approved for school expansion

TVDSB Trustees have unanimously approved a recommendation by Senior Administration to use $2,425,564 of the Board’s unappropriated accumulated surplus to fund the expansion of Masonville Public School.

In March 2018, the Ministry of Education originally approved a $5.9-million expansion project to meet increased enrolment at the school. However, soon after the original plan was approved, unexpected enrolment growth required the Board to submit a revised plan to the Ministry for approval.
On February 28, 2019, the Ministry granted approval of the revised scope of the project. The Ministry also approved Senior Administration’s request for the Board to use accumulated budget surplus to fund the revised project.

Built in 1952, Masonville Public School has a capacity of 363, but requires 14 portable classrooms to accommodate current enrolment of more than 600 students.

The $8.3-million project will include the following:

Addition:

  • 9 Classrooms
  • 2 Kindergarten Classrooms and 1 Partial Kindergarten Classroom
  • 1 Learning Support Room
  • Washrooms
  • Mechanical Space
  • Double Gymnasium

Renovations:

  • Creation of 2 Classrooms
  • Renovation of existing gymnasium into Library Learning Commons and staff room
  • Renovations of existing library into general arts classroom
  • AODA Improvements
  • Renewal Costs and School Condition Improvements

Next Steps: TVDSB staff are working to finalize design. Once finalized, the pre-tender budget and design will be submitted to the Ministry for final approval in order for the Board to proceed to tender.
